Personal Giants

“A champion named Goliath, who was from Gath, came out of the Philistine camp. He was over nine feet tall … So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him” (1 Samuel 17:4, 50).

We are all familiar with the classic story of David and Goliath. This giant from Gath was enormous in size and stature. He taunted the armies of Israel and showed no respect nor did he show fear. Goliath stood strong and was the wall that Israel could not overcome. But, Israel’s greatest fear was killed by a mere shepherd boy who was on his way to see his brothers.

In our personal lives many of us are faced daily by giants that seem far more intimidating than a nine foot man with armor, a sword and a spear. We face giants that could do far more than kill us, we face giants that torture us and destroy our family. We face giants called financial debt, sexual immorality, alcoholism, homosexuality, greed, gossip, heart ache, anger and depression. These giants torment us and nag at us so heavily that we fall victim to their power.

When we look at the giants in our life we see an unshakable and unmovable object that will prevent us from any forward progress. These giants intimidate us and ridicule us. These giants laugh at us and mock us for who we are striving to become and speak curses against us. These giants threaten our health, our family, our children, our marriages, our churches and our schools. These giants seek to destroy everything about us; just like Goliath sought to do to Israel.

But, David did not see a wall or a giant. He saw an enemy and an adversary of God. He did not see a giant that stood over nine feet in height but rather a man who hid sheepishly behind his armor. David had no fear. David was not intimidated by this giant because he served a great God who removes giants and destroys them. He serves a God who provides and protects His children. He serves a God who empowers, strengthens and blesses. He serves a God who cast mountains and giants into the sea.

You serve such a God!!! You too can have the same victory in your life that David had in his. Seek God and allow Him to fight the battle for you.
